Angefangen hat alles mit einer ganz alten 'Petromax-Lampe', wie sie vielleicht von Einigen im täglichen Sprachgebrauch genannt wird und unter welchem Namen sie auch vielleicht besser bekannt ist, die aber dann letztendlich weder eine 'Petromax' noch eine Lampe war.
Everything started with a very old "Petromax lamp" as it is usually described and under which name it is more commonly known in Germany. However, it finally it turned out to be neither a Petromax nor a lamp.

Meine Frau hatte vor vielen Jahren, als wir noch nicht verheiratet waren, auf einem Trödelmarkt eine alte 'Coleman-Laterne' gefunden und sie mir geschenkt in der Meinung, ich hätte Spaß an solch' alten Sachen (was ja auch stimmte) und ich würde sie schon in Betrieb nehmen können. Ich habe mich natürlich auch gleich darüber her gemacht, zerlegt, gereinigt soweit ich die Funktion verstehen konnte, alles schön poliert und wieder zusammen gebaut.
Many years ago when we were not even married, my now wife gave me an old "Coleman lantern" as a present which she'd found on a flea market and which she thought might be of interest to me and I would have fun tinkering around with and get it back to operation (which she obviously was correct about). I had of course started right away to disassemble it, clean and polish the parts and re-assembled it as good as I could with my non-present knowledge.

Da stand sie nun und ich hatte keine Ahnung, wie man so ein Teil richtig bedient. Also habe ich Ahnungsloser (glücklicherweise) Petroleum eingefüllt, einen Glühstrumpf angebunden, das Ventil aufgedreht und den flüssig aus dem 'Vergaser' austretenden Brennstoff entzündet.
Weder war bei diesem Betrieb der Glühstrumpf vorher ordnungsgemäß abgebrannt worden, noch wurde das Petroleum im Vergaser vergast, was der Name ja nun mal impliziert. Das Ende vom Lied war, dass die Laterne in hellen Flammen stand und wie eine Fackel loderte.
Dadurch wurde nun wiederum der Vergaser doch erwärmt, so dass nach einiger Zeit nun doch vergastes Petroleum aus dem Vergaser austrat und plötzlich die Laterne in strahlendstem Weiß innerhalb des halb verrußten Lampenglases leuchtete.
Mann, war das ein tolles Gefühl!
Finally it stood right in front of me and I had no idea how to operate and run such a piece correctly. Then without any clue I filled it up with kerosene (luckily), attached a mantle, opened the valve and fired the liquid fuel coming out of the "generator".
Neither was the mantle properly burned and shaped before lighting nor was kero-gas "generated" what the name of the generator should have implied. The end of the story was that the whole lantern was flaring and burning like hell.
Due to that the generator got hot enough after some time which in turn led the kero to vaporize and the mantle to glow bright inside the more or less sooted globe.
I can tell you: That was a feeling ..... :-))

Irgendwie kamen mir aber doch Bedenken wegen der sicheren Bedienung der Laterne, so dass ich wieder alles schön geputzt habe und sie -auch wegen des zerbrochenen Siebes im Mundstück- erst mal wieder in's Regal gestellt habe.
However, I had some concerns somehow because of the unsafe operation of the lantern that I finally cleaned it again and decided to put it back to the shelf, also because of the broken mesh in the burner cap.

Richtig weiter gegangen ist die ganze Geschichte eigentlich erst viele Jahre später, als ich nach Verfügbarkeit des private Internets und eBay Kontakte zu anderen Sammlern (in USA und Kanada) herstellen und mir die richtigen Ersatzteile besorgen konnte. Danach wusste ich was richtigerweise zu tun war und ich habe meine "helle" Freude an der Laterne.
The story only continued many years later after I had the chance to get in contact with other collectors in the US and Canada and acquire suitable replacement parts after availability of my private internet. Since then I know what to do correctly and I have "bright" joy with the lantern.

Mit diesem Erfolg stieg die Sammelleidenschaft dann rapide an, was schlussendlich dazu geführt hat, dass wir im letzten Jahr den USA-Urlaub mit einem Besuch beim Sammlertreffen in Yucca Valley, Kalifornien verbunden haben.
After this success the collectors obsession grew rapidly what finally led to a visit to the Coleman collectors convention in Yucca Valley, CA during our 2006 USA holiday.

Jedenfalls hat die Begeisterung, so viel zu sehen und so viele nette Leute kennen zu lernen dazu geführt, dass ich jetzt als erster deutscher Sammler dem 'International Coleman Collectors Club' beigetreten bin.

After all, the enjoyment to have met so many nice persons and fellow collectors as well as the fascination of the wonderful atmosphere has led to my decision to join the 'International Coleman Collectors Club' as the first German collector.
